What is wrong with PVC or Vinyl?
PVC and Vinyl (recycling code 3) are almost inescapable in todays market for baby equipment and even some toys. I have searched far and wide, and have finally decided to develop my own products which are guaranteed not to contain any hidden layers of PVC or Vinyl. PVC or Vinyl contain phthalates, mercury and dioxins and many other chemicals. The American companies which still use PVC and Vinyl do so with approval of the FDA and US CPSC, because at this time, PVC is still considered safe by these agencies. Many of these companies claim their PVC is phthalate free, but there are many other chemicals which go into the making of PVC. How can they be legally using a material if it is harmful to our health? At this time, PVC of Vinyl is considered safe to use in childrens products by the FDA and US CPSC. I would imagine they are testing a brand new product which has just come off the manufacturing line, and has not been subjected to children, sun, air, and time. The problem is that PVC or Vinyl break down over time and the chemicals inside the material leach out, or in the instance of a cracked Vinyl bib with high concentrations of lead, the baby puts the cracked bib in his mouth possibly ingesting large pieces of Vinyl, and by proxy, lead. Children playing with a PVC or Vinyl toy will have the residue on their hands, and then put their hands in their mouths. A baby lying on a PVC or Vinyl bathtub, swimming pool, changer, mattress pad, or mattress inhales fumes, and possibly has direct skin contact with this plastic. These toys and equipment are off gassing into our nurseries and homes, causing anything from sensitivities to SIDS, and maybe eventually cancer. PVC or Vinyl is durable and the cheapest choice for manufacturers of children's products and toys, at the expense of our most sensitive population, our infants and children. There are many safer alternatives available such as PEVA and Polypropylene. If you have any PVC or Vinyl it should be brought to a landfill, because burning with household garbage releases the chemicals into the air which we all breathe. Check your labels and codes printed in your plastics. Many popular childrens brands do not tell you what is in their equipment or plactics and there is a reason for that. I have called them and they either reluctantly admit, or refuse to admit that they use PVC or Vinyl. Buy what you know is safe for your children and environment, it may not be the easiest choice, but it will get easier over time.
